WAKELAND BAND FAQs
BAND REGISTRATION:
When is registration?
Band registration is in August a few weeks before school starts. Specific dates are TBD each year and will be posted on the website.
Who needs to go to registration?
Both the student and one parent are required to go to registration. This is where you will purchase required items for your child for the school year (i.e., shirts, marching shoes, concert attire). Your child will be measured for various items at this time so orders can be placed.
When is payment due?
Payment is due at band registration but other arrangements can be made if necessary.
VOLUNTEERING:
Do I need to volunteer?
Volunteering is a great way to stay connected with your child. It’s also a great way to get to know other parents in the band program. We would love everyone to volunteer for at least four activities. It takes everyone to make this organization work.
How do I sign up to volunteer?
There will be sign up sheets at band registration. Throughout the year emails will be sent out with various volunteer opportunities. Also, reminder emails for the events you signed up for will be sent out 10 -14 days before the event.
What if I can’t fulfill my commitment?
Please notify our volunteer chairperson as soon as possible so a replacement can be found.
If I have other children who are not in band, can they volunteer with me?
Yes. Be sure to have the Community Service Form applicable to their school. The one for Wakeland can be found on the Wakeland High School home page. Please be sure they have the form signed by the person in charge. It is their responsibility to turn it into the office where they attend school to receive credit for their time.
DRESS:
What does my child wear for marching band?
The school provides the marching uniforms. You are required to purchase marching shoes, gloves, and under armor to be worn under the marching uniform. All these items are purchased and sized at band registration, so there is no need to purchase these separately.
What does my child wear for concerts?
Ladies wear a black dress. You may select from a few styles during band registration and you are required to purchase the dress. However, the same dress can be worn each year.
Gentlemen wear tuxedos. You are required to purchase the shirt, bow tie, and cummerbund which are sized at band registration. The students are fitted for their individual tux at the start of school. Tuxedos are kept for the entire school year and turned in at the end of school.
We purchase different colored t-shirts, when do we wear them?
Mr. Miller will inform the students when they are to wear a specific t-shirt for pep rallies or other events.
ELIGIBILITY:
What does my child need to maintain eligibility?
The UIL requirement for eligibility is for a student to be passing or have a 70 average in all their classes. The 70 is not an average of all their grades combined but in each class. If your child is failing in one class he or she is considered ineligible.
How will I know if my child is ineligible?
Your child receives a report card every six weeks. If they are failing a course on their report card, they are ineligible and will not be able to participate.
Your child also receives a progress report at the three week mark in every grading period. If they are failing a course on their progress report they are still eligible to participate. This is a great time for your child to contact their teacher to see what they need to do to improve their grade before the end of the six week grading period.
Does my child still need to go to band if they are ineligible?
Yes. Band is a class and they are still required to attend.
How do I monitor my child’s grades?
Frisco ISD provides a great web-based tool to monitor your child’s grades. It is called HAC or Home Access Center and can be found on the Frisco ISD home page. If you do not have a username or password, please contact the Wakeland front office. Be sure to check your child’s grades frequently during the grading period. If you feel your child’s grades are incorrect, please discuss this matter with his or her teacher BEFORE report cards are printed.
What if my child needs help with a class?
All teachers provide tutorial opportunities before or after school. Make sure your child knows when they can receive extra help to maintain good grades.
PARTICIPATION:
Is my child required to attend all performances?
Yes. It is part of their grade.
What if they are unable to attend a performance?
Please let Mr. Miller know as soon as possible especially during marching season so he may fill the empty spot.
PRIVATE LESSONS:
Does my child need to take private lessons?
It is strongly suggested and encouraged.
How do I find a private lesson teacher?
The teachers are listed on the website.
What if I can’t afford lessons for my child?
Scholarships are available. Please contact Sarah Marquez atmarquezs@friscoisd.org for information. Everything is kept confidential.
INSTRUMENT MAINTENANCE:
Where should I take my instrument for repair and maintenance?
Mr. Miller recommends www.harmonichammers.com. You can contact Andre.
These are just a few frequently asked questions. Be sure to check the website frequently as Mr. Miller updates dates and times on a regular basis.
