3 Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I do all AP Classes and Band?

Most AP and Pre-AP classes are full of band students. It’s difficult for students to manage taking 8 90-minute lecture classes (A/B schedule) all-day, every day. We recommend Band as a “creative break” in the day - a chance to flex your creative muscle and a time to build your musical abilities (and your resume). The Wakeland Band has 3-4 students in the Top 10 of every class, and our students are often the most dedicated members in AP classes.

2. Is High School Band a lot harder than Middle School Band?

High School Band certainly raises the difficulty leve, but just like beginning band, we start systematically and build you up over time. If all you’ve ever seen is the finished product, you may not have realized the amount of work the band put in prior to that point. Band asks a lot of you - physically and mentally - but the rewards are great.

3. Can I take Band and Athletics/Theater/Choir/Orchestra/CTE Center classes?

We welcome and encourage you to take Band along with another area of interest during your freshmen year. The gap between 8th grade and 9th grade year is NOT a time to make a decision about your long-term future. It’s important to see what the high school programs have to offer - to take a “test drive”. Once you’ve seen how these activities function and are taught/coached, you will have a much clearer picture of how your high school years will be defined. Don’t be in a hurry to decide, or you could end up on the outside wishing you had stuck with one when you’re cut from another. Stay involved in more than one as you start your freshmen year, and make an informed decision about your future at Wakeland.
